Financial Support

Provided that satisfactory progress is maintained, all students accepted into the program are awarded full support, including a stipend, full tuition, and health insurance. 

Students are strongly encouraged to apply for outside fellowships. Fellowships that our students have been awarded include the National Science Foundation GRFP, National Defense Science and Engineering, NIH F31, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Hertz. 

Parental Accommodations and Financial Support

Students enrolled in PhD programs at Harvard Griffin GSAS who are expecting a child either by adoption or childbirth are eligible for the PAFS program.

Tax Information

Any grant or stipend amount awarded in excess of tuition, required fees, books, and supplies is subject to federal income tax, as is any funding contingent upon providing service to the University (for example, teaching fellowships or research assistantships). Depending on citizenship and physical location, income taxes may or may not be withheld from stipend payments. More details are available from Harvard University Student Financial Services. Students are urged to review this information and ensure that they incorporate any resulting tax obligation into their financial planning.

Fellowships

There is a wide array of external predoctoral science fellowship funds (i.e., from non-Harvard funding sources) available to PhD students. These non-Harvard resources can be used to help support--or even augment--the University's financial aid package, and we encourage students to look them over.  

All ChemBio PhD Program students wishing to apply for an NIH F31 Fellowship must do so through Colleen Frain, not through their lab's department.
